I specialize in doing commissions. Prior commissions include both corporate and personal portraits, landscapes, favorite animals and theater backdrops The prices range from under one hundred dollars into the thousands, depending on your request. The beautiful thing about commissioning a work is that you get exactly what you want, without having to hunt through numerous galleries and shows. It also permits you to get personalized pieces not otherwise obtainable.
Portrait Commissioning Information
- The best way to
determine
the cost of a commission is to provide me with a ball park figure you wish to spend, based on your portrait budget. I will then show you what you can get for that amount of money. We can determine specifics from there.
- All commissions are done on a contractual basis, with a 50% commissioning fee due at the commencement of the contract, with the remainder being paid at the time of handover. Any work that is not taken for what ever reason will be destroyed for the sake of privacy.
- There are many different ways of classifying portraits. Here are some general categories:
- Types of Portraits:
- Sketches
These can be done in charcoal and white pastel, in pen and ink or with paint. As implied
these
are the least expensive to commission.
- Private Portraits
These are done using artist's quality materials on artists quality
surfaces. They can be done from high quality photographs or actual sittings and
reference
photographs. They can have one or more subjects in them. Private portraits can include a
reference
type background.
- Corporate Portraits
These are done using archival quality materials including Belgian linen canvas. They include the submission of full scale preliminary drawings, several sittings with the
subject, and a master piece quality of work. The painting time to complete a corporate portrait can be from 100 to 400 hours. Given the proper archival care, they will
last
as long as any of the old master's works.
- Size Ranges of Portraits:
- Miniatures
The subjects head/s are 3 inches or less in height. Due to the additional work involved in achieving accuracy at these scales, there is an additional fee for all miniature portraits.
- Small Portraits
The subjects head/s are between 3 and 7 inches in height. The dimensions of these head and
shoulders
paintings are usually between 10" x 8" and 14" x 11".
- Half torso Portraits
The subjects head/s are between 7 inches and life size. They are of the full upper torso, and
frequently
include one or both hands.
- Super sized face
These contemporary paintings usually consist of a part of the face painted on a canvas
28" x 36" or larger.
- Full body Portrait
These are
between three quarters, and life size. They may be of either standing or seated figure/s and are done on large stretched canvases which may be as big as 72" x 72"
- Uses for Portraits:
- Gifts
- Family or other groupings
- Weddings
- Decoration
- Ancestral
- Commemoration of service
- Memories
