1. Two glazes of color were applied to the skin in the same way that the grey scale stage was done.  Colors used were yellow ochre, red, raw umber, and a blend of white and yellow for the highlights .  Allow some of the grey to show through in the deep shadows
  2. The clothing was similarly done using appropriate colors.
  3. The background was applied with rather heavy paint in bold strokes and then softly blended.
  4. Finally soft highlights were added into the shadows using colors as reflected from the background and clothing etc.
  5. A protective coat of picture varnish was added when the painting was thoroughly dry.  This can take from 6 to 12 months depending on climate.  It is necessary to wait this long to prevent the varnish from cracking latter.
