- Two glazes of color were applied to the skin in the same way that the grey scale stage was done. Colors used were yellow ochre, red, raw umber, and a blend of white and yellow for the
highlights
. Allow some of the grey to show through in the deep
shadows
- The clothing was similarly done using appropriate colors.
- The background was applied with rather heavy paint in bold strokes and then softly blended.
- Finally soft highlights were added into the
shadows
using colors as reflected from the background and clothing etc.
- A protective coat of picture varnish was added when the painting was
thoroughly
dry. This can take from 6 to 12 months depending on climate. It is
necessary
to wait this long to prevent the varnish from cracking latter.
